How to tighten/shim final drive
I just replaced the rear tire on my 2003 650 Classic and tightened the final drive with the rear wheel up in the air. My final drive is out of alignment (gap is smaller at the bottom). It looks like, in the service manual, they say to tighten the bolts with the bike on the ground? I still have the rear axle bolt loose, too. How should the bike be situated when I tighten the final drive bolts? On the ground, or in the air? And, if that doesn't straighten the gap out, what is the proper way to shim the final drive?

Thanks!
