vstar 1100 tensioner gasket failed?
    I have recently found a leak from my tensioner gasket on the front cylinder just below the forward exhaust. My question is what does it do and why did it fail?

I believe behind that cover lays the cam chain tensioner. I think they just get brittle. I can't really offer any more info though lol I have the 1100 too but it hasn't happened to me yet...

Yeah haven't had mine off, but I imagine it's just an O ring like the valve covers.

Well, I will say this, when it happens it will look like you cut your oil aorta! Unless of course I have another leak somewhere else which is always a bonus.

just looking at the pic again I would check the valve cover above the exhaust, there seems to be a fair amount of oil above that cover. Oil rarely flows up hill, so you may have a leak higher up?

Sorry about the pic size. Higher up is okay, what you see is oil affected by the wind. There is no oil above the tensioner cap. I'll take a better photo soon.

Ouch but no worries. Try to change the o-ring. I guess that's where the problem is. It might be failed due to over acceleration on low oil.

I think I have a leak from my tappet cover..I have a few o-rings on order. I plans to use some brake cleaner to clean the area to make sure..here are some pics...[Image: 8b7a1e32-bf29-45cc-baec-433e9e49ff5a_zps109e628f.jpg]

@jmck

Maybe to clean up that oil spot before he replaces the cover gaskets? Id orange clean or something with a nylon brush but whatever.

Just make sure you dont get that spray inside those tapped covers

RE: vstar 1100 tensioner gasket failed?
Well, wouldn't you know it, the gasket under the tensioner cap was shot afterall. When I took the cap off half the gasket stuck to the cap and half stuck to the motor. The gasket was so brittle it splintered off in tiny pieces while preparing the surface to install the new one. Aside from that inconvenience the whole job took about 20-25 minutes. The final result, bone dry! No more leaky cap!
