What Oil filter do you use for a VStar 650? And where's the best place to buy it?
Hi,

I'm planning on doing my first oil change on my VStar 650 and going with Mobil1 w20-50 syntetic as it comes very recommended. But, not sure which oil filter to go with, and where to buy it. Does the brand make a big difference?

Thanks

Welcome to the Crew. As for your question re-oil filter, there are several ways to go, and I am sure that @jhennly our resident 650 Guru will be able to point you in the right direction. Having said that the OEM filters are good value and you know they are made for the bike, then again there are a number of aftermarket filters that are reportedly better, and you can get them at virtually any bike shop.

Wix-24936 or Napa-PS4936
with your choice of synthetic oil, either Rotella or Amsoil. There are other filters but the ones mentioned are the ones I have readily available here. Like Gibbo mentioned though, call your local bike shop. They will most likely have a couple on hand.

Thanks for the answers, appreciate it. So, is there any issues going with Mobil1 oil and an aftermarket filter like K&N? Just trying to have stuff shipped to me for free instead of going to places and paying dealer/service prices Smile

No issues at all, just a personal preference.

hiya, i hear on that about paying much at shops. I just did my oil and went exactly with that you said...mobile 1 "v twin" and k/n filter. got the filter on e-bay for around 13?, no i think even less. my air filter which i also went ahead and changed was 13 or so. the oil was about 8 or 9 bucks. free shipping works for me too!

Thanks for sharing rudyjoe,
I actually went ahead and ordered the WiX-24936 filter. It was like 3 for 18 bucks at amazon, and free shipping. Will pick up Mobil1 oil today or tomorrow and do the oil change over the weekend.

My bike has like 5K miles, and wasn't ridden anywhere dusty or dirty, and garage kept all times, so do you think air filter change is also necessary? From the manual, it says "Check" not replace until later, but wondered what your experience was.

Thanks

Just to report, I did the oil change past yesterday, and everything looks fine with Wix filter and Mobil1 oil. The bike seemed to be running smoother than before. Thanks to the guys posting YouTube videos on how to do oil change.

Thanks for sharing opinions everybody...

Good job! With the low mileage on your bike, I'm sure you are ok on the airfilter.

A little late, but O'Reilly's Auto parts carry's Wix 24986 filters for around $8. Most other stores carry K&N's. don't forget to support your local stores too. ;)

Sorry to butt in, I don't have a 650, but in my 1100 I only use K&N FILTERS (both air and oil) Air is cleanable/reusable for a million miles. I buy all my filters on ebay, takes me a bit to search for best price and free shipping, but I have had great luck with them I usually buy them 2 or 3 at a time, (buy 2,use 1, order 2) that way I'm never waiting for one. I use Rotella T6 and I order it from Walmart for about $19 a gallon (I order 2 at a time, free shipping over $50)

i know, i'm just teasing. the reason i stuck with the oem oil filter is because i could never find an after market one where the pleats were double crimped at the seam with metal. i also don't trust the bypass valve on other filters some of em are even plastic or rubber were the oem uses a metal bypass valve. the glue is so good on oem filters i had to rip the media to check for debris.
