Trading my cafe racer for a V STAR with maintenance needs ...Need some imput
So I may be trading a cafe racer for this V Star. He says he has had it for a year now and it just quit running on him 2 days ago. He said it started to bog down when you blipped the throttle and eventually dust died on him one morning. He thinks the culprit is trash in the carbs or the needle/bowl.
What do you guys think? Have you ever had this happen or do you know someone that has? What did it cost you (time and $$$)?

The motorcycle I am trading him is a 78' Honda CX 500 converted into a cafe racer. Runs Great. The V star is a 2000 650 with tasteful upgrades. About a $1,000 difference in value (V star value is greater). The V star is in great shape besides not currently running. Would you trade?

THE LISTING IS ATTACHED

How well do you know the guy?

Seems kind of risky. Can you inspect it and check out the carbs. Will it crank over? If it won't run and you don't know him and can't inspect it -- it could be a lot of different things.

The engine could be seized, etc.

Now, I'm not trying to be a downer, but seems like you could get ripped off unless you have time to inspect it.

I agree with Matt, seems a tad sketchy. I would be very apprehensive to buy if I couldn't atleast pin down any potential problems, and have an idea of the cost to fix it.

If he's a close friend I would go for it . If it's just a random guy you met off of craigslist. I wouldn't recommend it at all. You don't know what kinda condition the bike is really in. Some guy can really just screw you over good.
