Need carb help - V-Star 1100
I have a new to my wife 2001 V 1100 with only 1,800 miles that we purchased after it has been sitting for a while. The bike is very clean but the carbs were clogged. After removing and cleaning, the bike started and idled great but was barely rideable since it would not accelerate. I removed carbs again to check for anything that I missed. The rubber boots on the slide were like new and the top end was clean. The bottom end had some more gunk in it and one of the jets was clogged again. I had siphoned as much of the old gas out and added fresh gas before the first attempt.

What has me stumped is that it will idle perfectly and accelerate "gently" - I rode it about 20 miles but had to ease up to speed. It did seem to get better with riding but never got right. It seems like it can't "breathe" above about 1/4 to 1/2 throttle.

I've worked on many older carbs but no detailed work on the CV type carbs with the rubber diaphragm that moves the slide up and down.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Is the carb starved for fuel when the demand increases? Possible fuel flow problem, not enough volume? Fuel filter? Still some sludge in the fuel tank? Just a thought or two.

I saw you posted elsewhere that the filter seems fine because fuel poured out the overflow, just the same I would replace it there cheap and easy to do.. aside from that I am thinking may be a vacuum leak check all the other hoses including where they run to.

You check your plugs? If it was running lean for a long time the plugs could be damaged due to detonation, but I am by no means an expert.

Does the fuel pump work? As in does it click a few times when you turn the key(the priming sound)

Have you checked the air filter?... if it looks normal and its the paper type excess moisture, over time, can screw with the fibers and impede air flow.

Are you talking about the filtery thing on the petcock? Or the other one down the line?

Also im just wondering what you ment by the overflow?

Im thinking you could run with the choke on a bit. See if it helps... if it does its a fuel problem, if not its probly air or something else

I tried it with the air filter out but with the cover on and it did not help matters. I was talking about the fuel filter between the fuel pump and the carbs. Yes the pump works fine, I rode the bike about 20 miles and still runs fine at low throttle openings. It will rev fairly well (but not great) sitting in the driveway but not under load. After sitting overnight after first attempt, fuel poured out of what I would have called a vent tube that comes up and over behind the air filter housing.

have you tried taking the gas cap off and riding round? could be a tank venting issue...just wondering

I'm at work and super bored... and i just hate that your bike wont work! >>>>>

Jmck said that you might have a vacuum issue. to check if you have one you can get a can of ether and gently spray it around the boots or any hoses. if theres any leaks itll pull the mist in and your bike will rev. just gotta make sure you dont get it in the intake lol

I experienced the same problem w the fuel coming out of the overflow on my 02 custom. Ended up that one of the float "jet" was sticking. Pull the carbs off again, pull each bowl separately, pull the float and the "jet" out and clean that area well. I ended up using some scotchbrite to polish up the jet. Fixed the issue.
