timing chain noise
My 03 classic has a timing chain whine other post say it's normal but it's pretty loud drowned out motor and stock exhaust when ridding at most speeds goes away at 65mph at idle if you rev lean down on right side of bike it sounds alittle.
is it the tensioner?

RE: timing chain noise
I don't have any help for you but I'm really interested if you find anything out. Mainly because I ordered some new camshafts and I hope once I install everything will go ok but incase it starts making noise ill know what to look for

If I learned anything from my old Honda, it was "take it apart!" Not only do you get to see how the silly thing works, you might find the problem sooner that you think.

RE: timing chain noise
just remember with thicker oil, give er longer to warm up as thicker it is takes longer to flow to the essentials.

RE: timing chain noise
are you certain it is not just the valves/tappets all the Vstars have pretty noisy tappets the gearbox is pretty tough, and to say that its on its way out seems a big statement. I don't know but I would think the 650 share many gearbox parts with the 1100, if not the complete unit, and that's fairly bullet proof. How many miles on the bike? additionally if you lean down on the right side (while riding) your head is closest to the top of the front cylinder, so I suspect that is what you hear.
as for thinker oil remember that the gearbox and motor share the same oil so as Keith says it takes a while to get to the important bits. the other thing I wonder is how much thicker oil is available because of the shared oil i would think your options are limited. not like a car where I once put 240w in a box that took 80w it solved the prolem, you can't do that sort of thing with shared oil you might be able to go from 40w to maybe 60w even 80w if they make it but I think the difference would be minimal.

RE: timing chain noise
Now it has 10w40 which is the thinnest recommended thinking of going to 20w50 its within the regional guidelines oh the bike has 12,500ml on it
does usa oil list the same ausssie?

RE: timing chain noise
that should be no issue changing to 20w50. 12500 is nothing I doubt the trans is going
