Looking at buying a 2000
I'm in the neighborhood for something to tinker with, and I found a Vstar 650 on our local classifieds that peaked my interest. it's a 2000 Classic with 32k miles. He's asking $2000 for it. Does that price seem fair? What should I look for when I go to check it out? I've only ever had 80's yamahas and a new Victory. My name is Chris and I'm new here. If this goes well and I get it, you will see tons of posts from me, I love tinkering with bikes.

RE: Looking at buying a 2000
Hi Chris,

Given your location I'd look in every nook and cranny of the frame, wheels, and suspension for rust on a 15 year old bike! I bought my 650 almost exactly a year ago, they don't salt the roads here, and I keep it covered and under a carport and I've got a bit of surface rust here and there.

I can't speak to the price but I'd be a bit leery of a 650 with 32k miles if you're looking for reliable transportation...the 650's are geared low enough that the engine is revving pretty high even at 65 so that's fairly high mileage. The 1100's will go 50k or more easily, but the engine isn't working quite so hard on them nor spinning nearly as fast at highway speeds.

I'm not saying the 650 is necessarily worn out - but if it hasn't been maintained "religiously" and/or if the rider was a big could be. Also, if you're mostly looking for something to tinker with and you have the tools and time, 650's are at least pretty cheap to rebuild and work on.

okay, good heads up there, I'll be sure to look it over well for rust. Yeah the mileage is what I was curious about. Im not looking at the bike for a over the road traveling bike. More of a bar hopper, and I work about 3 miles away from home, so its a short travel bike for me.
