Good day for a ride
Finally talked my father-in-law into going for a ride today. He rides another brand of metric cruiser, but we covered almost 150 miles. Now I know it is a short ride compared to what I read about on here, but just thought I would mention it. Rode down to S.C., stopped at a little roadside stand and picked up a healthy watermelon and a cantaloupe. Just got home to throw those bad boys into the fridge. This is the longest ride I have taken in about 3 months, definatly need to do this more often.

Call me a weenie, but 150 miles is about all I can do in a sitting. 100 is about my magic happy number before my butt goes numb.

You are SO right. I am fortunate enough to be allowed to work from home most of the time. It's very nice, and I'm thankful that I no longer have to face the daily 90-mile round-trip commute that wore me down for so many years. However, I'm still working 10-12 hours a day, sometimes six days a week, so working from home means I don't hardly ever get time to spend on the bike...then when I do have a few minutes to dash somewhere it's either to buy groceries or pick up my wife or something else where the bike just won't cut it.

As completely insane as this probably sounds to most of you - I'm actually looking forward to this week when I have to commute 32 miles round trip to our operations unit each day because the director of our business unit is going to be down from NY - it means I get to RIDE. :)

For me with my current ride, 100 miles is about that magic unhappy number where I'm dearly wishing my butt would go numb. Biggrin Longest straight-run ride I've made on the 650 was 250 miles last fall coming back from an over-nighter to Oklahoma (and that should have been about 225 miles but I missed an exit and got trapped on a tollway for a while).

I'm hoping some saddle modifications I plan to make this week will help. Basic problem for me is that the 650 Custom saddle is just too short for my arse...the part that begins to curve up hits me in just the wrong place. I'm hoping that a 5/8" gel pad will not only provide more padding but let me straighten the seat contour out some.

RE: Good day for a ride
For me only one ride in six or seven has a defined destination, other than, back home after the ride. Most of the time I get on and the first decision is at the end of the driveway. After that when approaching an intersection I again decide which way I am going. I normally ride for about 2.5 hours and don't pay attention to the miles. Staying off the major roads, seeing the countryside and enjoying the ride is my goal. Rolleyes

I use to have a [DISAPPOINTED FACE]210 mile round trip to work I'd leave at 430am to avoid traffic then leave at 230pm to head back an occasional detour to groceries or pick up fast food when the kid got tired of FFYMs (fend for yourself meals) now I do only 160 round trip which allows me some free ride detour time on the way home. . lol my ADHD cause added miles I see something shiny ahead let's go see what it is. oh wait what's that over there. lol this is why snot doesn't like riding with me lately.

RE: Good day for a ride
OK, time to come clean. I do ride to work every day but it is only an 18 mile round trip. the 150 mile ride took almost 5 hours to make. we took plenty of hydration breaks, stopped for fuel once, and stopped to have lunch, this is not counting the bathroom breaks that we had to make. I love the fact my father-in-law still rides, (he is only 69 years young) but golly, we stop more to pee than anybody I know. oh well still had fun. thanks for listening. again please don't misunderstand me, I was in no hurry. about 40 miles into it, we stopped to refuel. after that it is like ok lets see where this road goes, 10 miles later lets see where this road goes I totally enjoyed the ride, and we do not use gps or a compass, we just ride. thanks again

RE: Good day for a ride
Just wait until it's your turn to stop every 30 minutes to pee...
Beats the alternative though!!

Heh, heh. It's when they quit stopping to pee that you have real problems... Biggrin

Yeah...those SoCal commutes can suck. When I got out of the Air Force they told me to get a mapsco, mark every defense contractor plant on it, and then calculate the geometric center and buy a house there because sooner or later I would end up working for every one of those companies.

When I first started at Northrop Aircraft Division in Hawthorne I was commuting down from Victorville up in the high desert. That lasted about a week. I went and found an apartment six blocks from work... LOL
