Check Engine light / speedo pulse - update
Some of you may recall the issues that I had with the sensor in the speedometer causing the check engine light to come on at about 50MPH. The bike always seemed to run okay even when the light came on but whatever effect that signal has on the engine calculations is apparently pretty important; for nearly a year it was a problem and I never got over about 35 MPG (city or highway seemed to make no difference) but after yesterday's ride I filled up and checked mileage and I got about 53 MPG combined city (mostly) and highway. That's 18 MPG difference!

John

Oh...come to think of it there was another change - I replaced the stock pipes with V&H Cruzers, with the baffles in. So that may have had some effect on mileage, too.

Anyway, I'm finally happy with the mileage on this thing whatever the cause of the improvement!

Yeah...I kept seeing where @commonground claimed he was getting 55 MPG when he had his 650 and I figured he was just lying to me to make me feel bad... Wink

Dang! Just think what kind of mileage this thing would get on the highway with a six-speed transmission! I'd be totally happy with this bike and never trade up if it only had a six-speed. Even the seat is no longer an issue since I put that gel pad under the stock upholstery. At worst, I might throw another gel pad on top for really long trips.

I'm hoping to be able to do a lot more long range riding over the next few years and I'd love to be able to do it getting 55 or 60 MPG and with reliable, low maintenance shaft drive instead of trading up to something that's going to drink more gas and probably have a belt or chain to fool with.

yep like shaft drive, no adjustments, replacements, etc. keep reminding me and keep forgetting to change out the diff lube though and want to put the rear suspension up a notch, thinking going with the upper adjustment this time on the suspension.

@OldePhart Ha Ha It is even worse than that. I was actually getting 63 to 65 MPG on the 650 and almost all of my riding is back country roads. I am getting 55 MPG consistently on the 950. I got about 70 MPG on the 250. Sleepy
