DIY Air-Ride for Vstar 1100 !
Ok, I did it!
My health hasn't been nice to me and haven't been able to spend as much time in my garage as I would love to.
But for the last 4 weeks I've been working 1 hour here and there and trying to figure out how to make this work.
The idea started by me surfing through the Bagger forum and reading about many guys adding corvette air shocks to their Harleys.
It took a lot of thinking on how to make this happen with the set up in the Vstar 1100 and believe me there were lots of trial and error things and hundreds of ideas thrown in to the trash but I finally did it!
Still have to wait for a couple of parts to clean up the install but the raw product is working.
The main difference between my approach and any of the $900 plus kits out there is that mine is functional and not just for looks *.
All of the air-ride options out there use an air cylinder so, the main problem with that is that there isn't any dampering...it pretty much transform your bike into a rigid= no suspension ... Yes, it goes up and down but that's it :)

I took the bike out for a ride and the only other time in my life I've had a ride as smooth as this... was in my in-law's Roll-Royce :)
Materials:
-Monroe MA-785 air-shocks for Corvettes
-Bimba 98C air compressor
-Quick lock 1/8 fittings and T fittings
-Clevis piece from a stock shock (thanks @keith )
-1/8 solenoid valve with 150psi pressure capacity.
-in-line fuse
- 16 gauge wire
- 40 Amp relay
- On-Of-On switch

I'll post the step by step process once I've gotten all the parts I'm still waiting to be delivered.

Meanwhile here is a little teaser !

Man... I was hopping for a better ride felling but what I got was an incredibly smooth ride..
The suspension and bounce control is just kick-ass

Really happy with the results :)

damn, may have to do this, got a functioning shock and was man this is stiff, hah. old bod n back don't like stiff, big truck bounces around enough with stiff suspension.

so how does your better half like her new job, hope she loving it!

like i said before, be a good marketing product bro, set up a webpage and sell it nationally if not international! bet you can find some metal fab place make up the U shock end for proper fit, so just make up a kit with instructions bingo some income bro!

all I got is a adult rated shot recipe that considering putting on ebay for a few $ each, people love it and most have never heard of it, like a jello shot but better.

WOW.

is there any leakage from the shock once its pumped up? personally id love to do this but have it static. as in i could pump it up for two up riding and then drop it for just me.

Cant wait for the step by step!

The making sure there isn't any leakage is one of the challenges...the best the quality of the fittings the better chances of not having air leaking.
Im planning to ad a tank, a gauge, and a remote switch..
With the gauge you can have better control of how much air you need for solo or for two up..
Example: if you have a gauge and you know your comfort zone is 120psi and 2-up is 150psi ...next time you are pumping up all you do is look at the gauge and stop when it reaches the target psi...this instead of just going blind and doing it by feeling

Ps: no there isn't any leakage at the shock.. Leakage can come from other connections but not the shock.
One thing to remember is these shocks are rated at 1500lbs

@Maustarman

You definately need to put kits together and start selling them. Then add other models too.

And yes the fittings are a bitch. I've redone thefittings for the air bags on the truck 3 times and am now down to one very slow leak on one side.

Thanks man..
Definitely thinking about it..
I just have to dial up this thing and give it a good test ride and make some contacts and work it up from there

Hey John,
I thing the exact same set up can be mounted to the 650.. Actually 100 times easier :)
The only thing that would be different is the where to mount the compressor because I can't remember now if it could be mounted in the same place I'm using for the 1100.. I think it might be a bit different.
But it is absolutely doable :)

Im thinking that perhaps I can put together 1 or 2 kits.. Sell them out just for the cost of parts to a couple volunteers for early testing.
:) would anyone sign up ?

As soon as I get the pending parts I'll put together a list and figure out the final cost.
