Considering a V Star 1300
I got my first bike in 1982 and have been riding ever since. I've own all sorts of bikes, including a couple of cruisers along the way (a 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 Classic and a 2004 H-D FXDL/lowrider). My main bike is currently a 2010 BMW R1200RT...but I also have a couple of Viragos (1996 750 and a 1997 1100).

One of my best friends just purchased a 2004 VTX1800 (with very low miles). Since we ride together a lot, I figured it might be time to pick up another metric cruiser.

While my ego says I should get a displacement beast to compete with my friend, my head tells me that is unnecessary. :) I have become quite fond of Yamaha with several of my purchases (the two Viragos and an FJ1200, most recently), so I am looking at their offerings. I considered something like the Stryker or the Raider...however, I believe I am settling on the idea of a v star 1300.

Part of me says I should just simply ride the 1100 Virago with him...but I am very much into shared experiences, and I know it is a much different bike than a typical, heavier metric cruiser. And, honestly, I like buying new-to-me bikes. :)

I recall very much liking the floorboards and heal shifter on my Vulcan...should I be considering anything other than a v star 1300?

vstar 1300 is a sweet cruiser, could also look at the road star, it is bigger like your buds has the floor boards and heel toe shifter. some time the road will be my next bike, also look at if you want FI or carb, believe went to FI on the road star in 08.

Either is an option. I have lines on both an '07 v star 1300 and an '08 Road Star.

Will check both out on Monday afternoon.

RE: Considering a V Star 1300
The 1300 is a nice bike and I've even considered upgrading to a 1300 Tourer. But, honestly, if I was going to buy a Star in the 1300 CC range it would probably be the Stryker. I just love the lines of that bike and the raked fork gives about 2" additional wheel span which should make it very smooth on the highway. I saw one in pearl white with hard bags and a full-size windshield (not the little factory "bubble") and it looked very sharp and was quite comfortable.

thing is someone else had mentioned not too long ago if you watch, you can get the bigger road for very close to what the 1300 is going for, so seems like would be money well spent to get a road if not much more in cost.

yes @OldePhart the stryker is a good looking bike, isn't it a 1300 engine also/

Yeah. The Road Star and v star 1300 I am looking at are very similarly priced.

I also saw a Stryker and a Raider that looked nice...need to ride them all. Maybe I just need floorboards for my XV1100. :)

RE: Considering a V Star 1300
I'm pretty sure it's the same engine and drive train, and maybe the frame as the 1300. The longer raked front end and swept pipes make it look a lot different, though.

I was just looking at one today when I went to pick up an oil filter ($11 - last Yamaha filter I buy, now that I know what it looks like).

I was also looking at some $25k Victory baggers...now those were some nice bikes! No way I'm going to spend that kind of money on a bike, though!

RE: Considering a V Star 1300
yeah, will never buy bike oil filters, oil, or fuel filters ever again, way over priced and not any different, nothing is really bike specific no matter how much they scream it is.

i had looked at the 1300 for next step but not much power over the 1100 and i have some mods for a little extra, so road star would be it unless ran upon a deal on a royal star. they are a very sweet road bike. supposedly is a 1300 still but is the vmax engine, big difference! they unleashed the true power that is held back in the yam vtwins in that one!

Considering a V Star 1300
Test rode a Stryker earlier this week. It was ok. I assume the engine is the same as the v star 1300?

The engine was sufficient power/torque wise for my needs. But I'd rather have floorboards, some hard bags, and a decent windscreen.

So I think I will definitely be pursuing a v star 1300.

Does anyone know the MPG difference between the 1300 and the Road Star?
