Attempted the J slam tonight...didn't work out
So unless my math is off I went an inch from the current stock hole. My bike is on a jack and the rear end is out due to a tire tube leak. We were jacking up the swing arm with another jack. For some reason the shock will not get close to the hole as the frame and gusset won't allow it to get close. I'd be pretty mad at myself if I drilled too far.

So the running theories are..

I went too far with the hole

I don't have a stock shock mount.. Maybe the head on the shock is part of a lowering kit. That would explain why I can't make it because it's shorter.

The fact that I don't have a tire on it and I'm not using a ratchet strap.

Any ideas you can see the shock head bottoming out here...

Any advice is appreciated I just want to get back to riding at this point. But it would be great if I can make this work.

So I believe I found the problem after talking to some guys on the Facebook group. Sounds like a really need to ratchet it with the tire on the compress some of the spring which will force the strut to hit the mounting hole. The one thing that was tripping me up is I couldnt find a picture of this install completed from the top with no seat installed. Hopefully have this thing back together tomorrow.

Yep, looks to me like that is the issue. To avoid another potential problem, ratchet it with one hand while holding down the end of the shock with the other to keep it lined up with your drill hole otherwise it will pop up when you jack it and you wont be able to push it down.

Hi, I didnt read through all the replies to see if you figured it out, but I just did my v star 650 and it looks like your new hole is a bit more than an inch out, but that isnt that critical, all you need to do is drop the rear end, and jack up the body until the shock hole lines up, then pound your bolt in. It wont work if the rear tire is jacked up.
