Fuel Tank wobble
Hi all,

New rider here. I just picked up a 2012 v star 950 with 820 miles last weekend. It's my first bike and I've been riding it every day since. I'm absolutely hooked.

Quick question for all of you experienced 950 riders. I've noticed that my fuel tank has a lot of play or wobble. This isn't something that I notice while riding, but say if I'm parked at a gas station or tooling around in my garage and I put my hands on the tank it will sort of move around. Is this normal? My friend that I ride with has a v star 1100 and his tank stays firmly in place when you put your hands on it. I was looking for a bolt to tighten but couldn't locate it.

I'm looking for any advice. Is this normal? If not, what should I do.

Thank you!

I also have a 2012 950 and it does the same thing. I tried to tighten and still does it. I can tell you after 5,000 miles it has not came off :)

I had to walk over and check my 2012 950 Tourer. Yep, gives a little. That's only because the way it is attached. I guess you could install a cross member underneath if you wanted to lessen the give. Bought mine in July with only 1200 miles on it.

RE: Fuel Tank wobble
Yep, mine has the wobble also. Sounds like a normal thing. Probably uses rubber bushings, but I never looked. I imagine that is for damping the vibrations so the gauges are readable at speed.

After reading your post my curiosity got the better of me and I went out and tested the tank on my 2015 model and yep it does the same...

RE: Fuel Tank wobble
Tommy Boy is correct. The tank is mounted on rubber bushings to protect the electronics mounted to the tank. Check the 2 tank bolts at the rear of the tank to make sure the dealer tightened them correctly (17 ft lbs).
