Flag_blue  Bike keeps cutting out on me.....
Ok so I just bought a 2001 Yamaha Vstar 650 custom.

The guy I bought it off said he was driving and the bike died on him. When he pulled over he was able to start the bike with the clutch pulled in and the bike in neutral but when the clutch is released it dies.

I bought it and thought neutral safety switch, or kick stand switch or clutch switch...all of which have been tested and function properly. When I disconnected the clutch switch it runs with no clutch but then when shifted into gear it dies....

We tried a neutral safety bypass and ran the wire that runs to the switch directly to the frame and disconnected the clutch switch and were able to get bike to start shift and move....but obviously its not right. My mechanic suggests a ground somewhere but that could be anywhere....so any other ideas? or do I just need to look for the ground? Also where do I start looking? I am soooo bummed and just want to ride. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer....

I did also replace the neutral safety switch with a brand new one....

the blue/yellow wire to the clutch switch is suppose have a constant ground, just because the switch itself tests good doesn't mean it getting that ground signal. the clutch switch takes that ground signal from the blue/yellow wire and sends it to the ecm via the brown/yellow wire

I'd be looking at the kickstand switch, possibly bypass for testing purposes. That would be the only thing electrical that would cause it to die when shifted into gear.
