Aftermarket luggage rack?
Greetings, I installed an inexpensive trunk onto the OEM rack of my '09 1300 to hold my camera gear--I'm a photojournalist. I use a Domke bag that weighs about 35 lbs. It won't fit into the side bags at all. In order to install the trunk I removed the sissy bar & used nuts to refasten the bolts. So far so good. But after about a month I noticed that a couple of the bolts had come lose. One had fallen off completely. I also saw cracks in the metal plates that reinforce the rack as it angles away from the point of insertion. With the trunk in place I couldn't replace the lost nuts, so I took off the padded backrest, moved the trunk out an inch or two & replaced the sissy bar. I used fresh bolts with expansion rings, so I don't think the fasteners will vibrate loose again.

But I'm afraid this is a stopgap solution. My bag obviously puts a lot of stress on the metal & the break will only get worse over time. I'd like to install an utterly flat rear carrier and maybe add a Pelican case atop it eventually. But I'm having a hard time finding any that are compatible to the V Star.

Has anyone had any luck installing a different type of luggage rack to their V?

Thanks in advance,

andy
