Strange idle?
I just purchased my first motorcycle a couple of weeks ago (2001 vstar 1100 custom) to learn how to ride and what I do/don't like. I noticed that it sounded a little funny idling-just sounded uneven, like a pop here and a pop there behind the normal sound of the exhaust, sort of sounds like it is struggling. I didn't care much for the cheap sounding and rusted exhaust on the bike, so I decided to replace. Not being very mechanically inclined, I spent a decent amount of time on research prior to purchasing/installing new pipes because 1-I don't want to pay someone else to do it, and 2-I want to learn how the bike works so that I can better care for it. Anyway, I re-jetted the carbs (110 in front, 108 in rear) and installed the exhaust (cobra lo-boy shotgun) as well. Still same sounds during idle. Am I just crazy and the sound is perfectly normal? I understand that I need to sync the carbs. The repair manual says to check the valve clearance and idle speed first, so that's up next. The first things that come to mind to me would be the Pilot jets or the idle speed maybe? Not really sure. I'll try to post a video here but not quite sure how/if I can do that. Thanks in advance to any advice!!

RE: Strange idle?
jets are to smallshould be 112 and 115 mukuni.if you are using dyna jets you can google a dyna verses mukuni conversion chart.your pms (idle mixture screws) are probably off giving a funny idle.to get rid of popping you turn them out maybe a quarter turn to enrichen the circuit.its all in the tuning section. https://sites.google.com/site/vstar1100kb/home/tuning

RE: Strange idle?
Thanks for the reply. I'll look more into the jet sizing. I read so many different things about what size is needed. I am using dinojets, but I understand that these aren't the correct size. I have the PMS screw out 3 turns right now, I'm wondering if I need change the pilot jets as well, as this problem started before I re-jetted the main's.

if all you did was change the exhaust you improved the performance at wide open throttle by going to a larger main you avoid a lean condition. With louder exhaust you hear the popping on decelleration. stock exhaust masks the popping its always been there. To get rid of the popping turn the screws out a little until it goes away. https://sites.google.com/site/vstar1100k...st-do-list everything you need is in there. your screws are to far out. the tuning section will tell you how to set the carb.

sorry i keep bothering you with this.you can get Mukuni main jets at a Harley dealer, $5.00 each, mains are Small Round size 112.5, set your screws at 2 turns out leave everything else stock.

RE: Strange idle?
I'll definitely swap out those jets. Thanks for the info on where to get them quickly. There was already an aftermarket exhaust on the bike, however the tip blew off while riding -_____-. The popping is during idle. That guide that you attached the address for is sweet by the way.
