Locked up on freeway
Hey all, I need to throw out a quick question I was on the freeway doing about 70 on my 650 04 and I heard a noise felt like I was running into wind resistance and then all of a sudden the back tire locked up, getting it back to the shop I'm able to put a socket on the crank and rotate enough to touch the valves, the Pistons move up and down but it locks at both sides, starter engages properly but only go so far, all the valves are free, oil seemed fine...anyone have any ideas... I believe I might be looking at a transmission issue anyone have this happen to them, let me know... thanks, Gary.

you say the pistons move up and down, how do you know that? did you look into the plug hole while turning the crank or put something in the hole to feel the piston, usually a busted connecting rod will cause the issue your describing

RE: Locked up on freeway
I hope this isn't the problem but there is a chance the nut that holds the mid drive shaft in place has come loose. This has happened with a small percentage of V Stars, causing the driveshaft to come loose and can cause the rear wheel to lock up. I just bought my 1100 and I plan on checking mine during my spring tune up and caging the threads to make sure this doesn't happen. The bad news is that dealers will charge $3000 to $4000 to repair it as they need to split the case to replace it. There are alternative fixes though. Google V Star mid shaft and you'll get lots of hits on it. Again, I hope this isn't the problem.

his bike is a 650 no middle drive issues on those, if starter only turns the engine a half turn and bang it locks he's looking at a blown motor, at that point a used motor is way less expensive than trying to fix it. unless you can do all the work your self, there's a lot of internal engine parts for cheap money on ebay for 650s
