$600 2003 Vstar 650?????
I went to my local bike shop to ask about parts for my 2000 Vstar 650 classic.

The owner pulled me aside and shows me a 2003 650 custom. Very nice looking bike. Many accessories on it. But it only has three speeds. Fourth and fifth are not operative. He explained the original owner brought it in to fix the problem and it would cost more than the bike is worth to have the shop do the work. So the bike owner handed the pink slip to the store owner and said "here you go".

So my question to all of you, is the bike worth it? I am fairly new to this bike so I do not know how difficult it would be to put my motor in the place of the 2003 motor. Or repair the transmission myself. The bike started right up and as you can see it has been sitting in that shop for a while.

I assume all the parts are interchangeable with my 2000? I have always like the Classic look over the custom. So I would like to keep the classic one.

I appreciate your thoughts.

Well. I did a little reasearch. I'm gonna buy it (got it down to $500) and swap my motor and tranny into the classic. I like the look of it much better.

Any insight would be appreciated.

If ur mechanically minded at all its a pretty easy swap. Not hard just time consumimg to do it right

Thanks Stustar. I got the bike home yesterday and started the tear down right away. I have the 2000 all taken apart already. And just have the carbs left on the 2003 before I can pull that engine as well. It is all pretty simple. The new bike has the AIS system fully intact. I didn't have any popping on deceleration with the Vance and Hines pipes. Any reason I shouldn't just leave it on there?

i replaced the 5th gear set on my 2000 650 classic, took 2 8hr days and about 200.00 for the gears and gaskets, i had to use my friends press to change the main shaft 5th gear, i used cardboard templates for the bolts ( their are many lengths ) and little wire tags and pictures, it's not a complicated engine, strip the engine in frame as much as possible to lighten it up, or you'll need help twisting it out of the frame, i used shop rags and pull ties to cover the frame so it wouldn't get scratched taking the engine out, to get at the shift drum & forks you do need to split the cases, if the stopper bolt came lose you fix that with the engine in the frame, it's behind the clutch basket, pull the clutch completely out and tell me what you see, the shift shaft spring should straddle the stopper bolt which sometimes backs out. not for nothing but is 5th gear making any noise yet on your classic, kinda sounds like a fan belt hitting a shroud, my old 5th gears were pitted something awful, the early 650s had problems with 5th gears disintegrating

There is actually nothing after 3rd. The bike acts like its in neutral when I shift up from third. I am going to look at how much parts would be for the gears and gasket and such and maybe rebuild the bad tranny while its still out. It'll be easier to sell the bike and obviously more profitable with it fixe.

I have already pulled the bad engine/tranny out of both bikes and I am already about 3/4 of the way with putting the good engine/tranny back into the new bike. I muscled the engines out and muscled it back in by myself. (yes my back hurts a little LOL) The 2000 engine has half the miles that the 2003 engine had so I'm happy about that too.

Well, I got everything swapped over and now have a 2006(Shop owner thought it was a 2003) Vstar Classic with a 16000 mile motor and tranny in it. So very excited.

Now I need to decide what I should do with the 2000 Custom. I might just crack it open and see what all it needs. Ebay seems to be a good source for used parts at a good price. may make it worthwhile to rebuild it and sell it for a bit more. :) At least get some experience out of it if nothing else.
