Buying used V-Star wondering what to look for?
Hello and first off thank you for dropping in. I am new to the community and I am going to look at a 2000 V-Star 650. I was wondering what I should be looking for when I go to look at the bike. A little side note about the bike is it has 16,000 miles and he is asking &1,800. If you need to know more about the bike to answer my question I will try to answer or get the answer from the seller. Thank you in advance for your reply.

RE: Buying used V-Star wondering what to look for?
I'm fairly new to the VStar. But I now have two sitting in my garage somehow. HAHA. I actually have a 2000 with 16,000 miles for sale as well. And I am now an owner of a 2006 that I bought for $500 :)

Anyway, some of the things I would check for is tire condition(cracking/wear), cable fraying, rattling, exhaust mods that were poorly done, ease of starting, all lights, kickstand switch, speedo, blinkers, hi/lows or any other electrical gremlins. Those can pose a problem sometime. I tend to look at a lot of the bolt heads. Especially around the carb. People that strip them or just mangle them obviously didn't have the right tools or patience to be working on the bike, so who knows what else is wrong with it.

Those are just some of the little details I look for. I am sure someone with more mechanical experience with Vstars will pipe up on more mechanical issues to look for.

Good luck.

RE: Buying used V-Star wondering what to look for?
Hey there. I'm new here as well. I bought an 03 650 with 1100 miles on it for 1800. The dealer did put new matching tires on because it had 12 and 14 yr old tires. I'm new to riding, but not gullible

Other things I was told to look at were the cables for fraying, and the tank for rust or holes.

So...curious minds want to know if you got it or not.

the very first i would check is the drive shaft coupler, it's a very common failure on the 650 and cost big bucks to replace, seems the grease dries up and then the splines on the pinion shaft gear strip out , 400.00 for used and 700.00 a new rear drive unit if it happens
