Haha I felt weird answering it, but I didn't want to seem rude.

But yes HIS bike ( lol) from that view is ALL stock engine minus the exhaust

lol I like blue too, Linden. so Kirkman starts with a new stock element, then we will see where we are.

As said before start with the easy stuff, general maintenance is a must.

But I do agree it sounds like its running too rich. One thing to think about is what was the condition of the bike before the previous owner sold it. From the picture you showed us it obviously has the stock air cleaner and slip-on mufflers. I'm wondering if the previous owner had an aftermarket air cleaner and full exhaust that they removed before letting the bike go, If they did that could certainly explain why it's running rich.

Or like previously said it could be a problem in the carbs like a stuck float or maybe a stuck open needle. If that's the case though it would be likely the plugs would look different when you pull them since the 650 uses two carbs.

Truth be told IMO it sounds like the carbs need to be gone through, cleaned, and have the jetting checked.

RE: 2002 V Star 650 Not Running Right
@jmck I will not let it idle like that again. Luckily it was getting on the cold side that night so it should've helped a little. I will pick up a new filter first chance I get and let you all know what happens.

@Linden They look the same in the sun.

@Plague The plugs from both sides look identical. But if the filter doesn't fix/help my problem I'll start looking in to taking the carbs off and checking them out.

One thing I forgot to mention in my initial post was that I had noticed the bike surge a couple times while I was cruising down the road. Also, while tinkering with my bike yesterday I noticed that when I gave the bike throttle it was slow to come back to idle. Could this be part of the same problem or something else entirely?

Re: 2002 V Star 650 Not Running Right
To your add on, is have to say @kirkman sorry but I'm back to your carb, when you throttle open, it doesn't seal on release it seals back when it can. So again I'm terribly sorry hopefully a good carb cleaning will get you back right. That is the best case scenario as I see it.

Prolly won't hurt to get your hands dirty and start from scratch with a few dollars, clean the carbs, change the oil change the air filter, change ( and gap) the spark plugs.

RE: 2002 V Star 650 Not Running Right
yeah id clean the carbs too... you mentioned the rpms didnt go down when you let off the throttle. could be dirt

while your cleaning them id look at the jets. they should be numbered.

.........IF i was you id probly put 100 mains, a 22.5 for the pilot, stock needle and try 2 turns out on the pms screw

OH and yeah could be the air filter. has it ever gotten wet? water and lots of moisture really damage paper air filters. once i got stuck in the rain and my "pods" got soaked and pretty much NO air would pass through them

RE: 2002 V Star 650 Not Running Right
I have a 2003 V-Star Classic 650. It sat up for about 3-4 months and I got it out and couldn't get it to start. Put some more fresh gas in it and it would start and then shut off almost instantly. I bought a fuel additive and added it. It now runs with the choke out, but sounds like it's only in idle. Checked exhaust and top exhaust is warm and bottom exhaust is cold. Could this be clogged jets from the fuel sitting and clogging up? Also, the adjustment wheel on the fuel line, I adjusted back and fourth while trying to get it running. In order to get it back where it should be, what should I do? Is there a recommended start point? What should I do?

First thing you have to do is take the carbs off the bike and give them a real clean up...
That will get you going and after that you need to synch the carbs for a smooth ride
Hope that helps

RE: 2002 V Star 650 Not Running Right
my h&$%a had a fuel issue, bogging down on throttle...cant remember if there was smoke but the culprit was a pinched fuel line...could be something to check...
